Boat and Piers by James Swanson

Original oil on panel
16×20 inches unframed

Light is always a key in m paintings. In the painting of some boats tied up to some piers you can see how the boats pop out of the shadows of the piers. I really liked that and tried to capture it using a lot of painting techniques. Starting with painting in Alla Prima style with a limited palette used thin dark oil washes for the piers and then pulling out the light in them. The boats and water are painted with thicker opaque paint to make them jump out of the light.

Colors Used: Permalba White,Cadmium Yellow Light, Cadmium Red Medium, Cobalt Blue
