COMMISSIONING A WORK OF ART INFORMATION

WHAT IS A COMMISSION AND WHY WOULD I WANT ONE?

A commission combines the style and design ability of the artist with your own chosen subject matter, color, art size or whatever particular requirements you need. When you commission an artist, you work with them to create a unqiue piece of art that has special meaning to you.

Is there a person, place, animal or object from your past or present that you would like to capture? Do you have a color pallette in your home or office that you’d like to use as inspiration? Do you need a unique size or a series of matching pieces? These are just a few reasons for collaborating with an artist on a commission t create a unique piece of art.

Our professional artists range in style from traditional, to impressionism, to abstract and more. We will help you choose the perfect one to turn your artistic dreams into reality.

Bring images with you.

Examples: For a portrait, this could be photos of the person or furry family member (feathered or scaled as well). It could be a place like a beach house, old family home or specific landscape. If it’s a particular style, bring in examples of what you like. To match a room, bring in photos of the room.

Each artist deals with reference photos differently. When possible, some artists may ask to take their own photos or might ask you for additional photos of the subject.

If you have a specific photo you want reproduced, you will need to obtain permission from the person who took the photograph. All photographs are copyrighted by the photographer by default, not just professional photos.

Choose an artist.

One of our associates will chat with you about your ideas and answer all questions you may have about the commission process. Once we understand your needs, we can make recommendations to help match you to an artist that can make your vision into reality. You will look through our featured artist portfolio book to narrow down which artists you’d like to work with and view their paintings currently in the gallery before you make a final choice.

WHAT WILL IT COST?

Each commissioned artwork is a custom original and unique piece of art. The price for a commissioned work may be slightly higher than a painting that has already been created by the artist. We represent a wide range of painters whose work is individually priced by each artist. If you have a specific budget, please let the us know and we will match you with one of our skilled painters whose work falls within your price range.

ONCE I CHOOSE AN ARTIST, HOW IS THE ARTIST CONTACTED?

We’ll reach out to the artist(s) with all the information we have gathered from you and contact you if the artist has any additional questions. We will provide you with a price quote from the artist based on the details that have been provided. If you approve the pricing, the artist will provide a contract to be signed by both the artist and you. A non-refundable deposit will be required before any work begins. The amount will be specified in the contract and varies by artist. All payments will be processed through the Dutch Art Gallery. Once the contract has been signed, deposit paid, and reference material received, the artist will begin work on your project. The contract will outline how that specific artist handles commissions including their in-progress approval process.

HOW LONG WILL MY PIECE TAKE TO BE COMPLETED?

An approximate time frame will be specified in the contract. It will be based on the chosen artists current availability and can vary between artists. If you have a rush order, please let us know in the initial meeting so we can accommodate your needs. Additional charges for a rush order may be applied.

MY PAINTING IS FINISHED AND APPROVED BY ME. WHAT NOW?

Once you have approved the finished painting, depending on the medium, the artist may need to allow the painting to dry before a protective varnish is applied. The artist you choose to work with will be able to answer any questions about the varnishing process and if it is needed for their particular medium.

When the commissioned piece is ready, the Dutch Art Gallery will help you with any necessary framing. A good frame will enhance a work of art rather than detract or overwhelm it. With our over 50 years of framing experience, we will help you choose framing options that not only look good, but fit with the style of your home or office.
