Watches were historically a very common, high-value award given to winners of relay races, serving as a symbol of achievement, precision, and endurance. This watch was awarded in the 1950 Penn Relays. The Penn Relays are the oldest and largest track and field competition in the United States, hosted annually since April 21, 1895 by the University of Pennsylvania at Franklin Field in Philadelphia. We dug up information on Tom Kirwan who was awarded this timepiece for winning the 4×1 mile relay (anchor position). It comes from the 1950 University of Pennsylvania yearbook.
