Sometimes you approach a subject in the field with one type of artwork in mind, then the image transforms into something entirely different once back in the studio. The original focus for “Great Blue on the Bow” was a stunning Great Blue, perched on the bow of a workboat in Rockport, TX, marina. But as I closed in on my “subject,” I found the total reflection of the boat in the water to be just stunning. This piece is an example of artistic license, where I excluded a number of boats moored along the pier in the background to provide a cleaner, more serene vista upon which the great blue could gaze.
