We are excited to announce upcoming workshops from our own Patrick Michael Reeves. Due to popular demand, we are bringing back Patrick’s plein air workshops and a NEW Live Model workshop.

ABOUT THE ARTIST:
Patrick Michael Reeves is an experienced painter and instructor whose work emphasizes expressive realism. Specializing in both portrait and landscape painting, Patrick has exhibited his work across the U.S. and has gained a reputation for his ability to capture the essence and emotional resonance of his subjects. With years of teaching experience, Patrick’s workshops are known for being both informative and approachable, with a focus on helping artists move past common obstacles.

 

PLEIN AIR WORKSHOPS
This outdoor painting experience, hosted by The Dutch Art Gallery, offers a unique opportunity for artists of all skill levels to enhance their techniques in a natural setting. With a focus on light, composition, and the challenges of painting outdoors, participants will receive expert guidance through live demos, hands-on painting sessions, and personalized critiques. The workshop will take place at White Rock Lake in Dallas, Texas.

Standing easel or table easel
Canvas or panels (recommended size: 11×14 or 16×20)
Oil or acrylic paints
Brushes (variety of sizes, including
small detail brushes)
Palette and palette knives
Paint thinner (Gamsol for oil painters)
Paper towels or rags
Reference materials (optional)

Morning Session (9:00 AM – 12:00 PM) Live Demo with a Model

Patrick Michael Reeves will begin the workshop with a three-hour portrait painting demonstration, using a live model to guide participants through the foundational steps of portraiture. He will focus on simplifying the process by teaching essential techniques for proportion, light and shadow, skin tones, and expression. Emphasis will be placed on removing the fear of “getting it wrong” by embracing a systematic approach to portraits.

Topics covered during the demo include:
• Blocking in the portrait
• Capturing accurate proportions and likeness
• Understanding values and color mixing for skin tones
• Brushwork and blending techniques for a natural look

Lunch Break (12:00 PM – 1:00 PM)
Participants will have a one-hour break to rest, recharge,
and discuss the morning session. A light lunch will be provided.

Afternoon Session (1:00 PM – 4:00 PM)
Hands-On Painting & Critique
The afternoon session will allow participants to create their own portrait using the live model and applying the techniques learned from the morning demonstration. Patrick will provide one-on-one instruction, offering individual critiques and helping each artist improve their portrait skills. Participants are encouraged to take creative risks, knowing they have the support of an experienced mentor to guide them through challenges. The session will close with a group critique, where artists can share their work and receive constructive feedback, fostering a collaborative learning environment.
