Mule deer are one of the majestic icons of Texas, which is the reason I chose to paint one on a beautiful, antique Texas map. They are stocky and powerfully built and were originally named for their large, mule like ears. An interesting fact is that they do not run as other deer, but have a distinctive bounding leap referred to as stotting.
