This painting had a life of its own from start to finish. My original idea was to emphasize the movement of my subject. After completing the underpainting and the initial drawing I rolled out a fixative with a brayer to preserve this layer. The roller to my surprise picked up and repeated my drawing all over the background. To me these marks looked like petroglyphs. I decided to run with it and added some more giving the whole painting an added dimension. The blue areas surrounding the Indian and the horse help show movement through space and time.
