Kintsugi by Jana Swart

Original Oil on Canvas
24×30 Unframed

Kintsugi is the Japanese art of mending broken objects with gold, honoring the brokenness as part of the history of the object. As I pondered what kind of bird to place in the window, a cardinal tapped on my window. Cardinals are thought to be spiritual messengers. The word cardinal comes from the word “cardo” meaning hinge: the cardinal is the hinge on the doorway between Earth and Spirit. The door reflected in the broken mirror can be seen as an entry into the self. We are all broken but in our brokenness we are also whole.
